Sonia Delaunay costumes for 1920s play directed by Tristan Tzara

1920s costumes

The past always seems to repeat itself and in fashion, re-interpretations of bygone eras appear on the runway each season. Recent grad of Central St. Martins, Charles Youssef, finds himself dabbling in the archives of surrealist shapes for his latest collection. Using a graphic minimalist approach, Youssef mixes strong forms with bold color to create a geometric montage for the contemporary woman. Sonia Delaunay, textile designer and artist from the early 20th Century, has inspired many a musician and designer with her exaggerated costumes for Tristan Tzara’s play from the 1920s. Klaus Nomi, as well as David Bowie, have both borrowed her “suit look” as part of their performance attire.
