According to a police official, Spade was discovered unresponsive in her apartment at 850 Park Avenue. She apparently hanged herself, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10.26 AM, New York time.

According to reports her housekeeper found Spade hanging from a red scarf tied to her doorknob in her bedroom.

Spade and her husband Andy founded their brand Kate Spade in 1993, going on to develop one of America’s most successful contemporary bag and accessories businesses, noted for its nylon handbags.

She was known for her bright prints and easy-to-wear upbeat style. While in person she was easily recognizable for her 'nerdy' glasses, friendly smile and bouffant hair.

In 2007, she and her partners sold the brand for $125 million to Neiman Marcus Group, quitting the company.  Since 2016, she had largely devoted herself to philanthropy.
