Zalando and Scandinavian logistics firm PostNord are trialling a new service that allows individuals to use their homes as pick-up and drop-off points for online deliveries. The service will launch for three months in selected homes in Aarhus and Copenhagen and will be managed by Dutch firm Homerr.

Stay-at-home parents and pensioners will be able to receive parcels for their neighbours in return for a "small monthly income" - Zalando

Remko Bakker, Lead Zalando Logistics Platform Services, said: “Complementing the existing network with private pick-up and drop-off points could add tremendous value and customer convenience, since they offer a win-win situation for both the private operators and customers. People who are at home can help their community by accepting parcels for their neighbors and in return they receive a small compensation.”

The pilot will start with up to 50 pick-up and drop-off points operated by individuals. People who spend much of the day at home, such as stay-at-home parents, self-employed and pensioners, can sign up. And Zalando said operators will earn a “small monthly income” for providing the service.

Zalando is trialling the delivery service with PostNord, the e-tailer’s logistics partner in the Nordics region. The company will deliver parcels to the new service points, and will provide the IT infrastructure needed to support the project. It will be also in charge of notifying users via text or email when their parcel is ready for pick up.

“PostNord is always ready to test new initiatives and to contribute to the development and growth of e-commerce. We are very delighted to work on this test with our partner, Zalando. Customer demand is key to us, and we are now curious to see whether the Danish consumers take on this new concept,” said Stine Sander, head of e-commerce and communication at PostNord Denmark.
