Weill names Mathilde Castello Branco as its new creative director

Published

Inspired by its new forward-looking ethos, Weill has announced that it is setting off on a new adventure with Mathilde Castello Branco. With this announcement, the historic women's ready-to-wear brand, founded in Paris in 1892, has named the designer who will take over the creative direction of its collections. Having arrived at the brand in July, Castello Branco's work will be presented for all to see as of Autumn/Winter 2018.

The brand is turning over a new leaf, having entrusted its creative direction to Edward Achour since 2008. During these nine years, Achour has worked simultaneously to make the brand's image more youthful and to reposition it, bringing it closer to the codes of luxury houses, while rounding out the ready-to-wear range with exceptional products.

With its choice of Mathilde Castello Branco – former Azarro creative director from 2011 to 2012, but also Alber Elbaz's assistant at Lanvin for almost ten years – Weill has confirmed its desire to establish itself as part of a very high-end market. The Franco-Brazilian designer who, more recently, has also worked as creative director at Princesse tam.tam, received her training at Paris' Duperré School of Applied Arts and Atelier Chardon-Savard

Weill reported a turnover of 40 million euros in 2016, half of which came from the French market where the brand has around thirty single-brand stores. The brand also has about a dozen franchises internationally and is available in multi-brand stores in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
