Aug 13 (Reuters) - Urban Outfitters Inc (URBN.O) reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Thursday 13 August after the clothing and home goods retailer saw a modest improvement in sales.

Net income at the operator of the Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People chains fell to $49 million, or 29 cents a share, in the second quarter ended July 31 from $57 million, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of 26 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Revenue rose about 1 percent to $459 million, making the company one of the few apparel retailers to post a quarterly sales gain.
