US label Bode chooses New York for its first boutique

Last June, the Paris Fashion Week public discovered US designer Emily Bode, who staged her first catwalk show in the French capital. Her collection was inspired by the world of circus and a vintage mood, featuring clothes made with artisanal techniques.

Bode's New York boutique

Six months later, the Atlanta-born and New York-based designer, who notably graduated from the Parsons School of Design, opened her very first boutique, located in New York’s Lower East Side district, at 58 Hester Street. It is a stunningly designed store, enveloped in a coffee-coloured wood wall panelling which seems to belong to another era.

The interior design is by Aaron Aujla and Ben Bloomstein of the Green River Project studio, specialised in bespoke furniture and noted for their remarkable collaboration with The Row. They turned the Bode store into a celebration of Old America, with hand-crafted shelves and wall panelling, mahogany stools and sculptures, a classic bed and a vintage, Varsity-style sofa.

The Bode boutique

Decorated with a ceiling fresco by artist Lukas Geronimas, and featuring a fountain dating back to 1890 and other vintage objects, Bode’s first retail presence is an atypical one, giving New Yorkers the chance to discover the collection presented in Paris last June.

A wardrobe inspired by the designer’s family history, and specifically by that of the Bode Wagon Company, a transportation company created by Emily’s forefathers in the mid-19th century, famous at the time for being the hauliers of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Among the collection’s most popular items, a transparent waterproof jacket encapsulating old milk-bottle caps.
