Tod's: Hender Scheme designs next T Factory capsule collection

After Alessandro Dell’Acqua in 2018, Alber Elbaz in 2019 and Maiko Kurogouchi, designer of Japanese label Mame Kurogouchi, last year, it is now the turn of Hender Scheme to offer a fresh take on the heritage of Italian luxury footwear label Tod’s. Designer Ryo Kashiwazaki, who founded footwear and leather accessories label Hender Scheme in 2010, has been picked by Tod’s for the fourth chapter of the T Factory project.

T Factory was launched in 2018 as a kind of creative laboratory, to which various celebrities, among them designers, artists and friends of the Italian label, are invited once a year to create capsule collections that freely interpret, from the guest stylists’ perspective, Italian craftsmanship excellence and the expertise of Tod’s. The collaboration with Hender Scheme is set to be especially intriguing, since both labels focus on craftsmanship and footwear.

Kashiwazaki was born in the Tokyo region in 1985. After initially studying psychology, while at the same time apprenticing at a shoemaker's workshop, he founded genderless label Hender Scheme, forging a reputation with its artisanal shoes, made using raw leather tanned with plant-based tannins. Kashiwazaki has been successful notably with the Hommage collection, featuring a series of cult classics, like the Nike Air Force One or the Adidas Superstar, reproduced in fine leather worked almost entirely by hand.

Tod’s hasn’t revealed anything further about the collaboration, except that Kashiwazaki has worked on the project under the aegis of the Italian label’s creative director Walter Chiapponi, and that the capsule collection will be unveiled at an event during the Milan fashion week in September. It will then be commercialised at select Tod’s stores, including the label's e-shop, and at some top multibrand retailers like 10 Corso Como in Milan and Seoul, and Dover Street Market in Tokyo, Beijing and Singapore.
