In fiscal 2021-22, closed on September 30, German perfumery group Douglas, owner also of the Nocibé chain in France, recorded sales worth €3.6 billion, up 17% over the previous year. EBITDA in the period soared, growing by 49.4% to €325.5 million, almost back to pre-pandemic levels.

On the other hand, the group’s net loss in 2021-22 was €230.5 million, up from the €201.9 million recorded a year earlier. This was chiefly due to the acquisition of pharmacy e-tailer Disapo B.V, as well as to an increase in marketing expenditure and to the reorganisation that followed a number of store closures.

As of the end of fiscal 2021-22, Douglas operated 1,837 stores in 27 European countries, down from 2,078 in the previous fiscal year. To respond to changes in consumer behaviour and focus more on online sales, in January 2021 the group announced it was closing down 500 stores, including 62 of the approximately 600 Nocibé perfumeries in France.

Sales in Douglas’s physical stores grew by 27.4% to €2.44 billion, while the e-tail channel generated sales worth €1.2 billion, down 0.7% compared to the previous year, when stores where still closed in some European countries. However, compared to the pre-Covid period, Douglas’s online sales have doubled.

In France, in fiscal 2021-22, sales for the Nocibé chain were worth €781.2 million, well up on the €699.3 million generated a year earlier. Sales in physical stores amounted to €615.9 million, up 20%, while online sales fell by 9.3% to €165.4 million.
