Dutch mail, parcel and e-commerce company PostNL has started the construction of a new parcel sorting centre in Almere.

PostNL said that the new location should contribute to increasing the capacity for the sorting and distribution of packages. Additionally, the centre serves as an investment in the company’s package infrastructure to strengthen its position as a leading logistics e-commerce company in the Benelux region.

Liesbeth Kaashoek, Director of Packages and Logistics at PostNL, commented in a press release: “The package sorting center will soon have the BREAAM Outstanding certificate, indicating that it is a sustainable building with minimal environmental impact. For this PostNL invests in the most sustainable materials, the installation of solar panels and Heat Return Win installations. Furthermore, the building will be gas-free. This makes this property one of the most sustainable logistics buildings, of which we are proud.”

PostNL plans to open the Almere-based parcel-sorting center in March 2019. The centre will serve the regions Almere, ‘t Gooi and Lelystad and offers employment for about 400 people.

The new center marks another step in the expansion of the PostNL logistics network. In late 2018, the company will start using three recently-opened centers, which are based in Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and Venlo.
