Dutch mail, parcel and e-commerce company PostNL unveiled a new parcel sorting center in Amsterdam today. The center marks the company’s 22nd in the country and the third new space to open this year.

PostNL said that the 6,600-square-metre building will process between 70,000 and 110,000 parcels a day. The new location launched to contribute to the increasing capacity for the sorting and distribution of packages in both the Netherlands and Belgium.

The new sorting center has the BREEAM certificate 'Outstanding', which indicates that the building is sustainable with minimal environmental impact. The building does not use gas and PostNL invested in the use of sustainable materials and installations, including heat recovery installations and LED lighting. The solar panels on the roof generate 40% of the electricity needed to sort the packages.

Furthermore, some of the packages processed at the sustainable sorting center will be delivered completely emission-free with one of the fifteen new electric delivery vans. PostNL said that it aims to deliver completely CO₂-free in 25 Dutch cities by 2025 and an emission-free last mile throughout the Benelux in 2030.

The new location offers employment to approximately 400 people.

In September, PostNL announced that it started on the construction of a new parcel sorting center in Almere, a city about 20 kilometers from Amsterdam. The Almere-based center, along with two other parcel sorting centers are planned to open in 2019.

In addition to PostNL, German competitor DHL has also recently unveiled a new sorting center in Amsterdam.
