Palomo Spain’s fashion house, founded in 2016, has become part of history by having one of its designs displayed at the prestigious fashion exhibition held annually by the Metropolitan Art Museum.

“I am very proud to be part of the history of fashion, so  early on in my career,” the brand’s designer, Alejandro Gómez Palomo, told Efe at the opening of the exhibition.

It seems like this influential American institution has decided that Palomo Spain is one of the best representatives of this year’s theme, the peculiar ‘camp’ style, defined by extravagant designers that blur the lines between menswear and women’s clothing.

During the event, Met spokespeople talked about the need to celebrate this ambiguous aesthetic, which seeks to promote our freedom of expression against social norms, at a time of of political and social division.

“It is absolutely necessary. It is our way of living, expressing ourselves and feeling, it is what we like and what surrounds us,” said Alejandro Gómez Palomo about his androgynous designs, where he explores traditionally feminine elements to dress men.

Among 250 items from the most prominent designers in the history of fashion, is a wedding ensemble designed by Palomo Spain for the Spring Summer 2018 collection - a feminine gown in a delicate nude synthetic tulle embroidered with white silk flowers and ostrich feathers displayed on a male mannequin.

“We are the definition of ‘camp’, you could not be any more ‘camp’,” said the Spanish couturier, who said he felt partly responsible for the exhibition’s creation. Being part of it was one if his life’s goals.

“For me, life’s only purpose is to change and contribute to history in some way, to the history of fashion in my case,” he said.
In addition to Palomo Spain, the exhibition features pieces by Givenchy, Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Gucci, Chloe, Karl Lagerfeld, Giambattista Valli, Thierry Mugler and Christian Lacroix.
