Nike taps Martine Rose for capsule collection

Published

London-based menswear designer Martine Rose is the latest designer to team up with Nike for the launch of a capsule collection.

With the full collection set to launch in January, Rose did a secret pre-release of the capsule via Craig's List this week.

The Nike x Martine Rose collection features tracksuits, football jerseys and an exclusive version of the Nike Air Monarch.

The collection, which is described as playing “on distorted proportion”, also has English subcultural reference points, while the Monarch lives at the heart of the collaboration.

“It was very intentional to use the Monarch as the silhouette, being a very American shoe, and then put it with the very English silhouette of the tracksuit,” Rose explained.

Meanwhile, track pants were created with excess material and football jerseys were given an oversized fit with excess volume pleated into the sleeves to create a play on proportions.

Rose was also very aware during her design process how sportswear is now being adopted both on the high street, as well as on a Paris runway.

“Sportswear has been appropriated for years by various youth movements in England and America. The acceptability makes it so interesting. People can mix it in with any other type of wardrobe," Rose added.

Most recently, Nike launched a capsule collection with Ambush designer Yoon Ahn. In the past, the sportswear giant has also worked with the likes of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Jerry Lorenzo, to name a few.
