Maison Margiela launches Icons line

Published
Nov 18, 2021

Maison Margiela is developing and enriching its offering with the new Icons line, a range of elegant, timeless essentials for men and women. The collection is made up of classic looks that have been subtly reimagined by John Galliano, who has served as creative director of the iconic Parisian house owned by Italy's OTB group for the last seven years.

Available for purchase on the label's e-commerce site, as well as in the 31 Maison Margiela stores spread across the globe, the line is also being offered in a handful of pop-ups, specially set up in select locations in cities including London, Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai, during November and December.

The idea behind Icons is to bring together the Margiela 4 and 14 collections, which were dedicated to the creation of a timeless wardrobe of high-end classics. The new line is the latest step in the creative concept that John Galliano has been developing and implementing since his arrival at the brand, structured around the idea of a pyramid.

"Icons pieces are genderless propositions initially developed in the haute couture ateliers of the Artisanal collection, industrialized for ready-to-wear as part of the Co-Ed line, and now selected and perfected in order to take up their place in the Icons collection," explained the house in a release.

The pieces will be available permanently and will be reviewed and adapted over the seasons. The base collection will also be added to gradually with other "iconic" pieces. With coats, trenches, dresses, jackets, suits and knitwear, the new Icons line debuts with 17 looks that are instantly recognizable through a number of specific details, such as the M traced out in red thread on the buttons, the sewn-up buttonholes and the typical trouser hooks.

Prices for these basics range from 3,650 euros for the "décortiqué" trench and 1,750 euros for a mini bag, to 520 euros for the Tabi Mary-Jane pumps, 1,050 euros for a white denim jacket and 490 euros for a pair of jeans. The launch of Icons is being promoted with a short film directed by Olivier Dahan.
