London's Marble Arch Hill to open by June 21

The much-talked-about project by Westminster City Council, the Marble Arch Hill climbable instillation at the end of London’s Oxford Street, will open in June. It's meant to be an added incentive to attract consumers back to the area.

The plan was revealed earlier this year but no date or design was shared at that point, Now it seems that the temporary 82 foot (25 metre) high hill and platform providing views over Hyde Park and the West End will open in time for the end of all Covid-19 restrictions on 21 June. It will operate for six months and feature a viewing platform as well as space for events and exhibitions.

It is part of the £150 million rejuvenation strategy for the area to revive Oxford Street and the wider West End district as the area has been hit particularly hard due to slump in tourism alongside the repeated closure of stores and restaurants over the past year due to coronavirus.

Elad Eisenstein, programme director of the Oxford Street district at Westminster Council, told The Daily Telegraph that as consumers shopped more online, the area needed to find more ways of attracting visitors.

“We needed to make the area more attractive and greener, and it’s really important to have tangible projects -- we wanted something that can attract people back to the West End", he said.

“The diversification of uses is really important, and we know it’s got to be more than just retail. There’s going to be more leisure, culture and art. As people shop more online, it’s about making people remember that experience and increasing people’s dwell time.”

The council has also widened pavements at Oxford Circus and doubled the amount of trees and seating to accommodate outdoor drinking and dining. It's also launching a permanent open air photographic installation at the other end of Oxford Street this year.
