Inditex has picked a new general counsel. On Wednesday January 27, the Spanish fashion group announced that its appointments committee has agreed to propose to the board of directors the appointment of Oscar García Maceiras as the new general counsel and board secretary.

The decision was made after Antonio Abril, who has acted as the group's general counsel and board secretary for the last 32 years, asked to step down from his role. According to Inditex, Abril has decided to “focus on his duties as president of the Conference of Social Councils of Spain’s universities, and of the Social Council of the University of A Coruña (UDC).”

“This corporation must always be grateful for your consistency, rigorous work, dedication and expertise in a matter that is as essential for a company in the 21st century as good governance," said Pablo Isla, president of Inditex, about Abril, emphasizing the latter’s “decisive contribution to [Inditex’s] sound corporate governance, reputation and public image.”

Like his predecessor, García Maceiras, 45, is a state attorney. A native of A Coruña, Inditex’s new general counsel is director of legal affairs and deputy secretary of the board at Banco Santander. Previously, García Maceiras held a series of senior positions at Banco Pastor, Banco Popular and La Sareb. “He exemplifies the ideal combination of youth and experience, and has enjoyed a long and distinguished career," said Isla about García Maceiras.

At the end of Q3 2020, the revenue for the group founded by Amancio Ortega in the Spanish region of Galicia slumped by 14%, down to €6.052 billion, and its net income shrank by 26% to €866 million. Inditex’s results for the last financial year, marked by the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, will be published in March.
