BANGALORE, May 7 (Reuters) - Cosmetics and perfume company Elizabeth Arden Inc (RDEN.O) reported a narrower quarterly loss on Thursday, helped by modest improvement in retail sales and a new fragrance launch.

'Pretty' - New fragrance from Elizabeth Arden

Arden, known for its Prevage anti-aging skin products and perfume brands like Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, said net loss was $3.7 million, or 13 cents a share, in the third quarter ended March 31, compared with $3.8 million, or 14 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company posted a loss of 19 cents a share.

"We are seeing modest improvement in retail sales performance and are continuing to build market share," CEO Scott Beattie said in a statement.

Sales at Miramar, Florida-based Arden fell 3.4 percent to $203.5 million. (Reporting by Dhanya Skariachan in Bangalore; Editing by Derek Caney)
