Digital native ModCloth announces return to Europe

Vintage-inspired womenswear e-tailer ModCloth announced on Tuesday that it will once again be shipping to European markets for the first time since 2018, signaling the return of an important revenue stream for the company.

Founded in 2002, the Californian e-commerce retailer discontinued shipping to Europe in May 2018, following the implementation of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Manhattan Beach, California-based private equity firm Go Global Retail acquired the company at the beginning of 2020 and has been working to get the retailer GDPR compliant so that it can return to Europe.

Before leaving the continent, ModCloth’s international busines accounted for 20% of the company’s total revenue. The company’s return to Europe therefore represents an essential part of Go Global’s plans to re-establish ModCloth’s international reach and drive the company’s growth.

Speaking about the brand’s other projects for the future in a release, ModCloth Co-CEO Jeff Streader explained, “as new owners, our first priority for ModCloth was to reconnect with consumers, listen and continue those relationships in a more personal way which is core to the DNA of this brand.”

“Modcloth has always been a brand for women and vocal in its support of women's issues, size inclusivity and creating conversation. Now that we are back to being independent, we can revitalize those aspects of the brand that our customers really loved,” he added.

ModCloth begins shipping across Europe from September 15.
