Chinese apparel sourcing fair Chic opened on 11th October, recording a very busy first day in terms of attendance, with 23,600 visitors. This is a crucial edition for the show: after the organisers decided to leave the Beijing venue, Chic must confirm the success of the autumn edition, traditionally less strong, which was held for the first time in Shanghai last year.

Nearly 850 exhibitors have heeded the organisers' call for this fourth edition held in Shanghai, occupying two of the National Convention & Exhibition Center halls, as opposed to three for the March session. For their part, the organisers have taken care to address the criticisms expressed last October. The event is now in fact offering a more coherent, balanced subdivision between its sections. The huge space between the two halls, which in the past was left empty, is now busy with a selection of brands and manufacturers, and it also features an area dedicated to runway shows.

"Since the move to Shanghai in 2015, Chic has been able to offer the industry a new exhibition format," enthused the organisers. "Old codes have been bypassed, and a new format has been established. The Chinese fashion industry has witnessed a real evolution, and must deal with a new kind of economy, at a time when it is consumers who are laying down the rules. This new opportunity will be conducive to generating further success."

A year ago, Chic's first autumn edition in Shanghai brought together 57,000 professionals and 700 exhibitor brands. Last March, the spring edition, usually busier, attracted 104,000 visitors. Until 2014, the event was held in Beijing, before it was decided to join forces with the Intertextile fabric event organised in Shanghai by CCPIT-tex and Messe Frankfurt.
