In what amounts to a return to its roots, American workwear brand Carhartt has announced the production of no less than 2.5 million protective masks and 50,000 medical gowns for healthcare personnel.

The initiative by the Michigan-based company will contribute to a drive by many major ready-to-wear brands to fight against the coronavirus.

Carhartt may not be the first brand to take part in the drive to equip workers fighting in the frontline against the pandemic, however, it is certainly not skimping on resources with plans to produce 2.5 million protective masks and 50,000 medical gowns.

The brand announced the news on social networks, adding that production will begin in early April at its plants in Kentucky and Tennessee.

"To our brave men and women on the frontline, thank you. We are both humbled and honored to join in the fight to keep everyone safe," solemnly announced Carhartt on its Instagram account.

In a press release, the brand explained that it will start production of medical gowns on April 6, before launching its mask manufacturing line on April 20. It further pointed out that "as long as these critical items are in short supply, Carhartt will continue to assist in production."

The label, which initially specialized in workwear, has not forgotten the safety of its own employees. Carhartt will closely collaborate with local health authorities to ensure safe working conditions for staff that comply with social distancing recommendations and deploy stringent measures to keep its manufacturing facilities clean.

Carhartt has joined a growing list of brands and luxury houses that are now contributing to the fight against the coronavirus around the world.
