Bond Street Elizabeth Line link opens, should deliver millions of shoppers to West End

Shopping on London’s Oxford Street and surrounding high-profile areas has been given a big boost with the opening of the Bond Street tube station connection to the Elizabeth line.

The five-months-late and over-budget opening of the new step-free station will "relieve congestion at Oxford Circus and make the area more accessible", Transport for London (TfL) said.

It can accommodate about 140,000 people a day, with entrances at Hanover Square and Davies Street.

Although The Elizabeth line was opened in May, extended building work meant the Bond Street station opening was delayed until yesterday.

Train services will run every five minutes to begin with and from Sunday 6 November trains will run every three to four minutes, seven days a week.

Andy Byford, London's transport commissioner, said it would be the "jewel in the crown of the West End's transport provision. It is truly spectacular and will provide a highly significant new link to one of the busiest shopping districts in the UK, enabling even further connectivity to jobs and leisure for people across London and the South East."

Mayor Sadiq Khan added: “The spacious, stylish and step-free station at Bond Street is a huge boost for our retail and hospitality businesses and will radically improve travel across London and the South East by providing a new link to one of the busiest shopping districts in Europe ahead of the festive period. I can’t wait for Londoners and visitors to our capital to experience this beautiful new station for themselves.”

Since opening on May 24, the Elizabeth line has seen more than 27 million journeys on the central section, and more than 54 million journeys in total. It connects areas as far away as Reading, Heathrow, Shenfield and Abbey Wood directly into central London.
