Bahraini designer Rawan Maki launches debut collection in London

Bahraini designer Rawan Maki launched her debut Fall/Winter 2017 collection with an event in London this month. The event brought together over 100 guests including industry insiders, fashion designers and environmentalists.

The London-based brand, dubbed ‘the Arab world’s first sustainable clothing brand’, presented a collection of statement overcoats, an eclectic mix of dresses and a pantsuit – all created in line with Maki’s sustainable philosophy.

The environmental engineer turned fashion designer used fabrics that are either GOTS certified farmed organically, made with low impact dyes, or consume low amounts of energy during their production process.

Her inaugural collection includes an off-white Abaya with purple peace silk flowers crafted from recycled plastic products, while a selection of headbands put leftover textile to good use.

“15% of textiles produced globally end up as ‘cutting room floor waste’ - we don't believe in waste, and have rebirthed our luxe leftover material as beautifully crafted headbands,” said the designer.

The Fall/Winter 2017 collection is an ode to the land and sea that emerge in the aftermath of land reclamation, and explores themes such as receding shorelines, shrinking forests and recycling signs. The collection is available in London and online.
