Super Retail Group’s chairman Robert Wright has stepped down after eight years at the Australian sports and outdoor lifestyle retailer. He will be replaced by non-executive director Dr Sally Pitkin at the annual general meeting in October.

The group said Wright had chaired the company through a "period of significant growth and transformation" including the buying of the Rebel Sport and Amart All Sports businesses.

Wright referred to Dr Pitkin's "capacity and experience” as his worthy replacement. “Sally brings to the role a great depth of understanding of the company and I am certain that Sally shall provide outstanding leadership," he said Tuesday.

Dr Pitkin joined the board in 2010 and has served as chair of its human resources and remuneration committee since its foundation in 2011.

Super Retail Group, which has more than 630 retail stores across Australia, recorded a 66% lift in half-year profits to A$74.4m back in February. At the time, the company said it had returned to generating robust earnings growth with all three of its divisions performing strongly. And it had a solid start to H2 with its comp sales rising in the first seven weeks of the second half.
