Stance expands with launch of new t-shirt category

Published

Sock brand Stance has branched out into a third category with the launch of a t-shirt line for men and women. The tees follow socks and intimates.

"There isn’t a piece of clothing that people have a stronger connection to than their favorite t-shirt, and we felt like there was a lot of opportunity to reimagine this particular canvas,“ said Joey Jorgensen, VP of design at Stance, explaining the decision to expand into the category in a release.

The inaugural t-shirt line consists of three styles for men and women. The goal of the line is to apply material science to create pieces that function as a form of self expression.

The top-end shirt in the line, the "loopwheel" style, is made using a Japanese knitting technique that is meant to be the antithesis of fast fashion. The machine can only make up to 10 shirts a day and uses gravity to complete the knit. The end product is a shirt with an extra soft handfeel that does not lose its shape when worn. It is available in unisex sizing and in three colors.

The middle-tier shirt uses fibers derived from organic Icelandic seaweed knit together in what Stance is calling the Butter Blend. The shirt is purportedly breathable and lightweight while still retaining a soft handfeel. It is offered in both men's and women's styles in various colors and with several graphics.

The basic-entry tee in the line is made from Tanguis Cotton, a soft, long-staple cotton from Peru. It is available in multiple colors and prints in both men's and women's styles.

Jorgensen explained, "We meticulously deconstructed every part of what makes a great t-shirt, and then worked from the fiber up to build a collection that perfectly knits together the two primary things that we are known for – superior construction and art.”

Founded eight years ago, Stance began as a sock company and has since expanded into men's and women's intimates and now tees. The brand has previously collaborated on socks with Rihanna, Libertine, New Balance, and Modernica.

On the performance side, the brand was the first to have its logo appear on an official NBA uniform, where the sock was represented as the official on-court sock for the '15-'16 season. It is the official MLB sock and is currently worn on field by every team.

Stance's tees are now available online and at Stance retail locations. The cotton tee is priced at $30, the Butter Blend tee is priced at $59, and the Japanese spun Loopwheel shirt is priced at $100.
