2018 sees Hong Kong’s Redress Design Award open submissions to global entries for the first time, following several years of continued expansion.

The sustainable fashion competition launched in Hong Kong in 2011, and expanded to all countries in Asia, Europe and the US over the last three years.

The eighth cycle will encourage emerging designers and students from all over the world to participate in the competition, which aims to promote sustainability in fashion.

The award, supported by Create Hong Kong, offers the top ten finalists the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong in September 2018 to present their innovative waste-reducing collections and compete for the first prize. The winner will receive a chance to design a collection with up-cycled brand The R Collective.

Redress Founder, Christina Dean commented, “The fashion world’s ethical barometers are now switched on and we’re seeing an overarching yearning for positive change. Hope is now sewn into the core of fashion. We are now at a critical tipping point to act, especially for emerging designers who are ready to prove to the world that circular fashion can be a beautiful, retail reality.”

Applicants will be tasked to design a sustainable collection that re-claims unwanted textiles in unexpected ways through one or more sustainable design techniques including zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction.

Applications close on 13 March, with the ten finalists showing their collections at a fashion show in Hong Kong in early September.
