Dutch retailer Hema to expand to Austria

Published
Dec 7, 2017

Dutch retailer Hema has announced that it is expanding to Austria. The retailer, known for its large range that includes fashion, cosmetics and home products, will open two stores in Vienna in Spring 2018. Hema also aims to open additional stores in other Austrian cities later in the year.

Hema, which retails apparel and cosmetics alongside its home good selection, regards the expansion as the logical next step in its plans to further grow in Europe. The retailer expects to open 35 new stores internationally in 2018 alone. As of now, new shops are in the planning for Germany, Spain and the UK. Hema recently opened a 350 m2 flagship store at London’s Tottenham Court Road, the seventh in the UK.

In September, the retailer announced that it is exploring a possible sale. At the time, the retailer claimed that it is well-positioned to benefit from the future growth potential ahead, supported by a strong Benelux business and successful international expansion. In addition, Hema’s Q2 results illustrated that recent openings in France had contributed to a stronger performance in the country and an increase in total net sales.

Hema is currently active in 7 European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, The UK, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The retailer has more than 700 stores, offering 30,000 of its own brand products.
